Epiphone Hummingbird Pro

For quite a while I have been thinking about buying a Gibson acoustic when I sold the 12-string.  I finally decided that it was probably a good idea to invest in something less expensive since I was going to leave it in Florida.

After considerable research I decided on an Epiphone Hummingbird.  We spent four weeks in Florida in the fall of 2017 and I sold the Martin on October 24.  I was going to wait until we got back north after Christmas but fate intervened!

After church and breakfast on Sunday, October 29, we drove to the Lakeland area to go to a flea market over there.  Since we were looking for a car to leave in Florida, we went to check a specific dealer out.  We drove by the Guitar Center on N. Florida Avenue so we decided to stop in.

They had the same guitar, an Epiphone Hummingbird PRO acoustic-electric guitar in faded cherry.  Better yet it was on sale for $70 less than I was going to get it on-line and a hard-side case for it was $50 less than the one available on-line.

It had to be!

The Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric guitar brings the legendary country/rock "Hummingbird" into the 21st century with the new Shadow ePerformer preamp and Shadow NanoFlex pickup system.

First introduced in 1960, the square shouldered Hummingbird quickly became a classic thanks to Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones, who used a Hummingbird for rhythm on early Stones hits like "Satisfaction," "Play With Fire," and "Under My Thumb." There are also many classic photographs of Keith using a Hummingbird on sessions for Exile on Main Street, Goat's Head Soup, and Sticky Fingers. Today, the Hummingbird is still a go-to acoustic for rockers like Noel Gallagher, Sheryl Crow, and Kid Rock when they need a rhythm guitar with smooth action and superb "woody" tone that's full of character.

On its own, the Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric can drive an all-acoustic band or be front and center at a picking party with its sweet, balanced tone. Now with the Shadow ePerformer preamp and Shadow NanoFlex pickup system, The Hummingbird PRO can plug-in and hold its own on any size stage.

Solid Spruce Tonewood
The Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric features a solid spruce top. Spruce is a rich and complex tonewood that begins to breathe and improve with age. The more you play, the better it sounds! The body and neck are made from select mahogany. The Hummingbird PRO neck has a classic SlimTaper D profile and features a 24.75" scale and is attached to the body with a glued-in dovetail joint. The rosewood fingerboard has pearloid parallelogram inlays, 20 medium frets, a 12" radius, and a 1.68" nut. There is single ply white binding on the fingerboard and 5-ply white & black binding on the body top while the back of the body has single ply white binding. The Hummingbird PRO has the classic sloped dovewing headstock has the "Epiphone" logo in white.

The Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric's reverse belly rosewood bridge has a compensated saddle for smooth action and intonation. The Shadow NanoFlex pickup system is under the saddle and the classic Hummingbird/flower tortoise shell style pickguard is easy to spot on stage or across a room.

Shadow Pickup System
Epiphone and Shadow Germany have worked together for over a decade at perfecting ways to amplify an acoustic guitar on stage. The Hummingbird PRO is just one of many Epiphone guitars that feature a cutting edge pickup system that can handle any size gig and still produce an "acoustic" sound. The Hummingbird PRO's controls for the Shadow ePerformer Preamp are on the upper bout and include controls for Master Volume, Treble and Bass EQ, Mute, and a Dynamics control adjusted via a frequency curve. There is also a low batter indicator. The preamp is powered by two 2032 batteries. The output jack and strap locks are nickel and the Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric is strung at the Epiphone factory with time-tested D'Addario Phosphor (12-53) strings.
