I was first contacted by Keiji on February 25, 2018. This
FG-360 is the 9th Japanese/non-USA import model we know of and number 87 overall.
Hi David,
Nice to meet you.
Thank you for compiling and
sharing the comprehensive
information on FG-360.
I am glad to come across with
your page, and would love to
share information on my FG-360
along with some pictures.
I moved from Kyoto, Japan, to NYC back in 1980, bringing my FG-360 with me.
It was purchased at a local
guitar store in Kyoto in 1972 or
73, probably for about $200~300.
Unfortunately, the stamped serial number is illegible (see pictures) no matter how I try to light and look at the area from different angles. I cannot even tell if it is 5 digits or 8. There is no marking on the neck brace. My guitar is missing the pick guard which buckled, and I peeled off many years ago.
The tuners have YAMAHA logo and
Made in Japan mark—They are made
with much duller metal (not sure
what, but they lack the
stainless-steel look seen in
pictures by others).
One apparent difference I’ve noticed is the label in the sound hole. Mine has the address, under the company name: NIPPON GAKKI CO., LTD.
10-1 NAKAZAWACHO HAMAMATSU
JAPAN
This is still the address of Yamaha Corporation’s headquarters.
BTW, coincidentally I was there
in early 2000s as my creative
services firm, Littlefield &
Company, developed the very
first global website (in
English) for Yamaha, for both
their music and motors
businesses.
My FG-360 sounds increasingly great as it ages—bright, warm and full-bodied. (This sounds like I’m describing my favorite wine…) I am certain to cherish this guitar for years to come. Best regards,
Keiji Obata
