Airboat Ride

On Thursday, March 19, we drove down past Lake Wales, to the southern edge of Lake Kissimmee to go on an airboat ride.  It was a place called the Grape Hammock Fish Camp and we would greatly recommend it.  We were a bit early so we strolled around the place before the ride and then we got on the boat.  They provide you with headsets so you can hear the pilot/guide.  They also help to quiet the noise from the boat.  It has a 500 CID V8 which generates 575 HP and it is sitting right behind you so it is very noisy.

The operation is a family run business and the guide is the owner who grew up in the business and on Lake Kissimmee.  He knew the area well and pointed out alligators and eagles as well as other wildlife.  We saw several gators including a swarm of babies that were only a foot or so long.  He told us that the gator will lay up to 60 eggs and it looked like this mama laid all of that and they had all survived, so far.  There was a mess of them.  It was a really good experience, like something you would see on CSI: Miami!
