Castillo de San Marcos

Castillo de San Marcos is the "oldest masonry fort and the best preserved example of a Spanish colonial fortification in the continental United States."  This is according to the literature provided at the fort, which is now operated by the U.S. National Park Service.  Ground was originally broken on October 2, 1672 for this facility.
