Old Jail

The St. John's County Jail was in downtown St. Augustine and when Henry Flagler started building an upscale hotel he reasoned that having a jail neighboring his hotel, it would not be good for business.  He had a new jail built a mile north of the city.  This was completed in 1891 and housed prisoners for over 60 years.  The tour was very informative and it was remarkable how bad the conditions were for the prisoners back then.
