Tarpon Springs
On April 6, we took a drive over to
Tarpon Springs. We have visited this area two or
three times prior this year but had't gotten any
pictures on the previous trips. Tarpon Springs is
a town known for the sponge industry there. We
walked around and through several of the shops, visited
the sponge museum and then had lunch at a Greek
restaurant there. Sponging was a major industry a
couple of hundred years ago in Greece and the
Mediterranian and when sponges were discovered in the
Gulf, many Greeks immigrated to take advantage of their
experience in this industry new to Florida. Tarpon
Springs has a heavy Greek influence.
After lunch, we drove over to Howard
Park which is just outside of Tarpon Springs. We
had been there earlier for a Tippecanoe Village picnic
but didn't explore the area. This park is on the
Gulf and there is a causeway to the area of the park at
the end of it. There are hiking and walking
trails, as well as a beach area.
