Lantern Floating ... May 29, 2017

A Memorial Day tradition in Waikiki is the annual lantern floating.  It is held at Ala Moana Beach, which is just down the street from the hotel we were staying at.  According to news reports, there were 50,000 people there.

They start the evening with some speeches and entertainment.  Then anyone who purchased a lantern takes it to the shore, lights it and floats it.  These lanterns are like a small wooden raft with a paper wall on it and a candle inside.  There were hundreds, if not thousands of lanterns floating in the bay.  We were warned that some of the undesirable locals prey on the tourists so we did not take our good camera.  These pictures were taken with a cell phone.
