Our trip to Ireland ... September 2012

Day 7 ... Sunday, September 23

We had breakfast at the hotel and headed out at 9 AM for Cobh (Cove) where we toured the Cobh Heritage Centre/ Queenstown Story Museum.  Many Irish immigrants sailed from here and it was the last port for the Titanic before its fatal maiden voyage.

From here we went to Cork, Ireland's second-largest city.  Then we went to Blarney, which is in County Cork, where we visited the 15th century Blarney Castle and kissed the Blarney Stone.  Legend says that anyone kissing the Blarney Stone will be granted magical powers of eloquence.  It isn't quite as easy as it sounds.  You have to lay on your back and scoot back several inches while lowering your head to reach the stone.  There is a staff member there who holds on to you so that you don't fall.  Some people might also need help getting back up!  The castle is next to the Blarney Woolen Mills store.  We ate lunch at the mill restaurant and shopped at the outlet store.

County Cork is special to both of us.  Marcia's great-great grandfather Hurley was the first of her Hurley family to immigrate and they came from County Cork.  David's grandparents, William Alfred and Elizabeth Pressly Kelley were from Cork.

After Blarney, we traveled to County Kerry and the town of Killarney, the tourist capital of Ireland.  We had dinner at the Travel Inn Killarney, where we stayed for two nights.  After dinner, we went into town to a pub called Danny Mann.  This is a take-off of Danny Boy, the popular Irish song.  There was a traditional Irish duo here that was very good.

These photos were taken in Cobh, Cork, Blarney, and Killarney and on the road.

on to day 8
