Our trip to Ireland ...
September 2012
Day 11 ... Thursday, September 27
After breakfast at the hotel, we left Galway City. Our
first stop was a tour of Connemara Marble, a facility where they
make marble jewelry and trinkets. From there, we went to Kylemore
Abbey in Connemara where we had lunch. On our way to Sligo,
we stopped in Westport where we went to Matt Malloy's Pub and had
a Guinness and Irish coffee. Malloy was a musician with a
century old band called the Chieftains.
Today was Arthur Day in Ireland. This is a commercial
celebration started by Guinness in 2009 to commemorate the 250th
birthday of the company. Now it is an annual celebration and
all life stops at 5:59 PM. On a 24 hour clock, this is 17:59
in honor of the year that Arthur Guinness signed a 9000 year
contract to rent the property where the brewery is located.
At this time, everyone is expected to have a Guinness in his
honor. We had a Guinness at McGarrigles Pub in Sligo, then
dinner at an Itlian restaurant in Sligo with Paul, Gail, Bob,
Donna and Fred and Patti, a couple from Michigan that was also on
the trip. After dinner we went back to the pub for another
and then to the Glasshouse Hotel in Sligo where we stayed one
night.
These photos were taken at Connemara, Westport, and Sligo.
