RC Air Show ... June
4,
2016
On Saturday, June 4, the girls suggested
that we go out to an airfield at Hickam for an air show
of RC planes. Having been around RC aircraft, I
thought I knew what to expect. Wrong! This
event is promoted as the "Biggest Little Air Show in
Hawaii" and it was something else.
The aircraft involved were radio
controlled and were smaller scale replicas, but that is
where the similarity between this and what I was used to
stopped. To start with, most of these planes were
a lot larger than I expected. They were promoted
as exact scale replicas and according to the emcee, were
a lot more expensive than you would usually see.
Many of them had jet or turbine engines and burned jet
fuel! The announcer told us that some of these
exceeded 200 MPH.
There were even a couple of helicopters.
The pilots of these did some things that I didn't
realize were physically possible with a helicopter and
they were done at breakneck speed. They were moved
in virtually every direction. I overheard one
woman comment that it reminded her of a dragonfly.
Some of the aircraft pictured are
full-sized crafts but the rest are these models.
